Have you ever tried to start something new or change a habit?
It’s a law of the universe…when you’re trying to change, you’ll experience resistance.
You’ll slip up.
You’ll miss a day.
Life will happen and you’ll get busy.
Motivation runs low and you just “don’t feel like it.”
It’s normal to have some bumps along the way! So many of us let that completely derail us, though.
You don’t have to eat the whole cake because you ate a slice.
Don’t quit exercising because you missed a day. Or 2. Or 12.
And don’t ditch the new habit you’re trying to create because it’s been 21 days and it hasn’t magically become automatic. (I think the 21 day thing is garbage).
You can increase the odds of your success with a few simple things.
👨👩👧👧 Make it bigger than yourself. It’s too easy to shrug things off when we’re the only ones who are impacted. When you make it about someone else, suddenly we have a lot more reason to press on and stay disciplined. Remind yourself of who you’re doing it for in those times you feel tempted to quit.
🤗 Be realistic and cut yourself some slack. If you’ve been making poor dietary choices for years and have gained a lot of weight, it’s going to take some time to reverse that. You’re not going to drop 50 pounds in a couple months. You’re changing your way of life, and you WILL see results…if you keep going. Just be ok with it taking a little more time than you prefer! And cut yourself some slack. You didn’t get to where you are overnight, and you won’t drastically alter your situation overnight either.
🆘 Get help. Whether it’s a friend you check-in with, a FB group that offers support and accountability, or a coach you’re paying to help you, get some help! It’s too easy to make excuses and justify our slip-ups, mistakes, and laziness. But when we’re accountable for our actions, it can give us a little boost in moments of weakness.
If you’ve fallen off the rails, forget about that and get back on track! You can’t change the past, but you can alter your future. So let’s get after it!
